Forum: GratefulDead Subject: OH FIRE........ how sweet.....

very warm sounding recording.... inside the group sound as it were... jerry sounds SUPPLE on the vocal -- i know what the fuck is that? supple? it is a product of the overall effect of the high quality recording and the sound of CONFIDENCE in his voice.

the TEMPO is perfect. that is the key to so many performances.... at this RATE jerry really can WRAP AROUND every phrase, on guitar and vocally.... and of course there are surprises.... BRENT pops up in lovely places sending nice raspy harmonies into the mix and he has perfect command of the organ (huh?).... in a swell rapport with BOBBY.... an excellent, double excellent mix! they all seem to be coaxing all the sound, volume and timbre they can from their axes. PHIL speaks up and fades....... TONE AND TEMPO reign supreme in this conversation..........

get to FIRE, and jerry fairly lopes in with "long distance runnnnner....." again is the tempo as jerry seems interested in every little crevice of every note, HYPNOTIC, yes -- but drawn out drugged, painted in a corner and SERIOUS SOUNDING -- it is THAT element garcia had of DETACHMENT, of having his own muse he was chasing and a bit of disregard..... after the vocal at 23:00 he drops in to a very cloudy, static drenched tone and recedes into the background, but still playing lead, srumming very fast but only hitting a note here and there along the way.

at 25:30 he comes back to the more friendly, whispy wahwah effect..... the return to the VOCAL: jerry has that way of hanging onto a syllable to the point where you think he isn't singing it right.... but then he turns the phrase so beautifully and is on to the next line before you know what happened....

they play along without consequence, jerry riding the rhythm a bit. at 29:30 he gets some wonderful tones on the low strings and works his way up to the last vocal, commanding the band to a peak....

not jerry's most lucid performance, by a long shot, but as far as lethargic, drug-drenched journeys into sweet hypnosis and contemplation are concerned -- A KEEPER!
